Netpunk September 2000

Since I spent the last couple of columns talking about Anarchy and Fashion (and really, what's the difference?), this month I'm going to toss a few websites your way that have been submitted by various readers. A reminder here that I only talk about the sites I found worthwhile, and ignore those that were stupid, short on content, slow, or otherwise a waste of my time.

Having said that, I should probably mention that if I haven't mentioned your site yet, it might or might not be because of the reasons above. Oh, and if you just put your site up, and you don't really have anything there yet, don't tell me about it until you actually get some content. I usually look at sites soon after receiving e-mail from you, so you should wait until you are really ready to unveil it to me. Thanks for listening… Now, on with the show.

I got e-mail from Aaron of The Probe the other day to let me know that punkrocksex.com is now free of porno banner ads. I guess the web designer wanted them up there for a couple of months to help pay for the site. Aaron got some hate mail because people that otherwise like The Probe found the ads to be degrading. Anyway, there are still nekkid people on the site, but no annoying banners.

It's been a couple of years since I mentioned the 10 Things Zine website. The website is an extension of the hard copy zine of the same name, focusing primarily on punk in the Pacific Northwest. The cool thing about the 10 things website is that, not only does it include much of what is the in the paper version of the zine, it contains a lot more. Visit it at http://www.10things.com/ and you might even find a non-internet related column or two by yours truly.

Someone mentioned that I should check out the Johnny Thunder Cyber Lounge, and I am glad that I did. If you're a fan of Thunders, the NY Dolls, and the like, then this is the place. Tons of articles, stories, old photos, guitar tabs, and a few sound files make this very worthwhile. I just wish there were a few more songs available. Still, visit the Lounge at http://home.eol.ca/~ifftay/thunders.htm .

I was checking out the Attila the Stockbroker page at http://www.tvsmith.com/attila/ (which includes both old and new Attila stuff -- and if you don't know who Attila is, you definitely need to visit), when I realized that the main URL was http://www.tvsmith.com/ . Yep, you got it -- it is the page for all things TV Smith and The Adverts. Lots of cool archival information here, as well as what TV is up to nowadays. Check out the new EP he recorded with Punk Lurex O.K. -- I think I'll be ordering it right away.

As long as I'm on an ancient history trip, I might as well mention the Electric Eels page at http://www.electricfuckingeels.com/ . This is actually maintained by the Eels' John Morton, and contains some audio, as well as an (somewhat lame) explanation of the use of swastikas in their logo. Punk rock for the non-politically correct.

Speaking of political incorrectness, you should pay a visit to Scuz's Living Hell at http://www.angelfire.com/ab3/jscuz/ . A bunch of ranting here about how shitty life is, and how great GG Allin is. It's a laugh riot, though it isn't supposed to be.

If you're in the mood for some old-style punk, you might pay a visit to the Foreign Legion website. This band originally formed in the mid-80s in South Wales, broke up for awhile, and are now back together. Some pretty cool photos here, both from the early days of the band and newer pictures. There is also a mp3 that will take you awhile to download but is worth it if you have the time. Visit Foreign Legion at http://www.geocities.com/foreignlegion2000/ .

A new band out of Chico that plays good old raw punk rock is Inverted Nines. Their website isn't anything to go crazy about, but visit it for the MP3s of their songs. You'll dig it, I promise. Check out http://www.audiogalaxy.com/bands/invertednines/ .

Josh Hurtado sent me some e-mail about his Hardcore Action Photos gallery. There are some pretty good photos here of (mostly) relatively unknown punk and psychobilly bands, including What Happens Next?, AFI, Hayride to Hell, and more. You can check out his pictures at http://www.geocities.com/rockinzombi/index.html .

That's all I have time for this month. Don't forget to check out my past, current, and future columns at http://www.diehippiedie.com/netpunk or send e-mail to me at netpunk@diehippiedie.com . And, keep those sites coming. See ya.
